Here's another way:
1. Open Ravelry.
2. Go to "Messages".
3. Send a bunch of PM's out to your local friends and say that people will be at a local coffee place at a certain time, with their knitting.
Simple.

Our group has been using Facebook a lot, as it seems that some people check that more than Ravelry (for shame!)
